AAP – Agriculture Government of Sindh

Traditionally, the agriculture sector is focusing on producing high yielding crops to fuel economic growth and feed the world’s population. AAP Agriculture for Nutrition Project, Department of Agriculture, Supply & Prices Government of Sindh strengthens the links between agriculture and nutrition by implementing the most effective approaches to retain and enhance nutrition in food along the agricultural value chain – from food production to consumption and sell.

AAP Agriculture for Nutrition will contribute by helping target households increase the availability of vegetables and fruits for consumption by

  • introducing small-scale vegetable farming and kitchen gardens,
  • introducing labor-saving technologies for women
  • improving the quality of production through training, and
  • introducing techniques to store and process food to smooth consumption


INFORMATION OF AGRICULTURE SECTOR WITH HIGHLIGHTING MAIN ACTIVITIES RELATED TO NUTRITION
Increase consumption of a diversity of vegetables among consumers, especially women and children, to improve nutrition and health. Vegetables and fruit are important sources of micronutrients such as vitamin A, iron and other phytochemicals that are essential to good health, but consumption in most countries is well below WHO minimum recommendations of 400 grams per person per day.
The project will first focus on introducing nutritious food through kitchen gardens—focusing on women as the main producers. The project is serving as a demonstration for scaling -up the approach in future through regular agriculture extension services in Sindh to continue process to control the malnutrition. Agriculture will contribute by helping target households increase the availability of vegetables and fruits for production and consumption of diversified food. Key activities are as under:

  • Social Mobilization
  • Male and Female Farmer Field Schools (FFSs) about integrated nutritious vegetable and fruit cultivation
  • Demonstration of Kitchen Gardening (KG) and females training and capacity building
  • Labor saving small agricultural machinery demonstrations
  • Farmer Business Schools
  • Capacity building and awareness about Agriculture for Nutrition
  • Introducing techniques to store and process food to smooth consumption
